Online fraud continues to evolve, and recently we have seen increasingly sophisticated attempts directed at e-commerce websites and online shopping platforms we manage.
None of these attempts resulted in a successful fraudulent purchase. However, several came close enough to the payment-processing layer that they warranted additional investigation and an immediate strengthening of our checkout security.
In one recent case, multiple low-dollar orders were submitted using different customer identities while targeting the same product and purchase amount. This pattern is consistent with what the payments industry calls card testing: automated attempts to determine whether compromised credit-card credentials are valid before criminals use them elsewhere for larger transactions. WooCommerce specifically identifies repeated low-value purchases, rapid checkout attempts, multiple identities and failed payment activity as common indicators of card-testing attacks. WooCommerce
What We Did
Rather than waiting for an attempted transaction to succeed, US Digital Works added and verified several additional layers of protection across the affected e-commerce environment.
We integrated hCaptcha directly into the WooCommerce checkout process, requiring suspicious checkout sessions to demonstrate that a real person—not an automated script—is attempting the transaction. We also enabled protection on WooCommerce’s Add Payment Method function, helping prevent automated systems from using customer-account payment screens to test stolen card information.
Additional bot-detection controls were implemented, including:
- Honeypot protection, which introduces fields invisible to legitimate shoppers but detectable by many automated scripts.
- Minimum form-submission timing, helping identify bots that submit checkout forms faster than a human realistically could.
- Continued monitoring of WooCommerce and payment-gateway fraud indicators, failed orders, IP patterns and transaction errors.
- Verification of the connection between the website, WooPayments and its underlying Stripe payment-processing environment.
- Live checkout testing after the security changes to verify that legitimate transactions continue to process normally.
WooCommerce recommends CAPTCHA protection and transaction-velocity controls as important defenses against automated card testing, along with monitoring repeated payment attempts and suspicious IP or customer patterns. WooCommerce
Importantly, security controls need to be balanced against the customer experience. An online store that blocks every unusual transaction can create almost as many problems as one that blocks nothing. WooCommerce similarly recommends combining several moderate controls rather than relying on a single overly aggressive fraud rule. WooCommerce
Why Would Someone Use a Bot to Buy a $10 Product?
Often, they don’t actually want the product.
Automated criminals may have thousands of stolen or compromised credit-card numbers. An inexpensive product on an online store gives them a way to test which cards are still active.
If a small transaction succeeds, the validated card may later be used for a much larger fraudulent purchase elsewhere—or sold as a confirmed working card.
That is why seemingly insignificant failed orders deserve attention.
For businesses operating an online store, a failed $20 transaction may be a security signal rather than a lost sale.
What E-Commerce Businesses Should Check
If your organization accepts online payments, we recommend periodically checking:
- whether CAPTCHA or equivalent human-verification technology protects checkout;
- whether payment-method and customer-account forms are protected;
- whether your payment processor’s fraud controls are enabled;
- whether several failed transactions share the same IP address, product, transaction amount or behavioral pattern;
- whether unusually rapid checkout attempts are occurring;
- whether WordPress, WooCommerce, payment extensions and security plugins are current;
- whether successful test transactions can still be completed after security changes.
No fraud-prevention technology can eliminate every threat. WooCommerce itself recommends layered checkout security, payment-gateway protections and manual review when circumstances warrant it. WooCommerce
Security Is Becoming Part of Market Advantage
This work also connects to a broader direction underway at US Digital Works.
Increasingly, website performance, marketing performance, customer experience, cybersecurity and business intelligence cannot be treated as separate disciplines.
We are beginning to incorporate our new human-governed Market Advantage Engineering approach into this work—supported by technology being developed through our sister company, Moat Factory.
Moat Factory is developing a human-governed decision-intelligence marketing platform designed to help organizations evaluate market signals, operating information, customer behavior and business decisions while keeping people—not automated systems—in control of consequential decisions.
That same philosophy applies to security.
Artificial intelligence and automation can identify patterns, flag anomalies and accelerate analysis. But experienced people still need to determine what those signals mean, whether intervention is appropriate and how a business should respond.
Our Commitment
US Digital Works continues to monitor the websites, commerce platforms and digital infrastructure under our management and implement current best practices as threats and technologies change.
For our managed-services customers, our objective is straightforward: detect problems early, make measured technical improvements, test them carefully and keep legitimate customers moving through the experience with as little friction as possible.
If your organization operates an online store, accepts credit cards online or has experienced unusual failed orders, it may be worth reviewing your checkout-security configuration before those attempts become successful ones.
US Digital Works customers can contact our support team for a review of their e-commerce checkout and payment-security configuration.
