Keyword Research 101: A Simple, Repeatable Process for WordPress Content Teams

Search evolves, but the fundamentals haven’t changed: keywords are proxies for intent. The work is finding the terms your audience uses, matching their intent with the right content, and staying current as the SERP changes.

Start with intent, not tools
List the problems customers are trying to solve. For each, write the question they’d ask out loud. Those natural‑language prompts become your seed terms.

Discover and expand
• Use your site search, Search Console queries, and sales/support transcripts for seed ideas.
• Expand with an SEO tool to surface related terms and “People also ask” questions.
• Note the format of the top results (guide, checklist, comparison)—that’s the winning shape to emulate.

Classify to prioritize
Head terms (short, high volume) are competitive; target only when you’ve built authority.
Long‑tail phrases (longer, specific) reveal clear intent and convert better.
Geo‑targeted terms for local pages.
Topical and LSI variants to enrich posts without keyword stuffing.

Estimate difficulty and pick your fights
Look at the first page: are you competing with dominant brands? Do results include features (snippets, local pack, shopping)? Favor queries where you can own a useful angle and reach the first page with quality + links.

Turn research into a 90‑day plan
• Choose 8–12 targets; map one primary query per post.
• Outline H2/H3s around subtopics users expect.
• Plan internal links from relevant older posts and service pages.
• Publish, then revisit in 4 weeks to tighten titles, intros, and descriptions for CTR.

Write for humans, answer the question up front, and give a clear next step. Keep metrics (from Post #2) close so you can double down on what works.
